Set up

Before setting up the space there were many tedious little tasks such as taking all the velcro, paintings/ photos off the wall, and having to repaint over the marks ...

... but over the top of this the new "shoe art" looked ace.

Packing light...

... Me, at Glasgow Central. We took the train and not plane this time, as I couldn't bare the thought of having my luggage lost by the airport, so we braved the five hour journey together with our luggage in sight which rested my nerves.

Making things on the train

1) Pendants

2) Nani Bird & flowers for collage... We got bumped up to first class so imagine the looks we got when taking out our scalpels, paper, scissors, glue! The birds did attracted a lot of interest and the couple opposite us even offered to help make some!!!

All aboard the Kraftwork train...

Finishing touches...

I'm sure I mentioned it in an earlier post but I've been going to Wimbledon's Saturday Car Boot Sale ever since this project started. The reason for it is because I've managed to collect a lot of reclaimed material (wood and odd bits of card that no one wants ) to laser cut into for the necklaces (some tests have worked better than others). It has also made me obsessed with finishing touches inside the boutique! I collected these old set of stitch and knit-craft magazines and think they'll be nice to off-set the vintage feel of the kimonos. I want the little details to be considered so people remember the event!

Spreads from look-book

Colour coded sections:

Why spiral bound?
London Fashion Weeks s/s 08 was created with large wire spiral binding to great effect. It was cost effective portable and easy to flick through. In terms of the event we (Hetty and I) wanted something that you could leave open on a page so that people would pick it up.

However, I am still going to complete Hetty's LARGE LOOK-BOOK in the future, hopefully in time for LFW, which will be caked in content which I am starting to build a library of, through images and collected interviews.

"Flowers and shoes" shoot:

> The photographer, Miukee, and I bought flowers from Columbia Road flower market and left with more flowers than either of us could carry. who would have thought flowers could be so heavy?!!
> After setting up lighting and a few preliminary tests we realised that the shots just weren't working, it look like the shoes were discarded in a florist. Not good. We took time out, looked through magazines and then started taking closer crops and using out of focus flowers in the foreground and were much happier with the results... see images below...

Promo/ exclusive invite designs

Here are the layouts for the postcards. The idea being that they can also be take-away art pieces too and not a standard invite. Each of which can be found in the gift bags we're giving away at the show.

Nani Bird

Two days before leaving to go to Bonnie Scotland I came across "Nani Bird" founded by Josh Bird, who creates these wonderful paper birds...

... Anyway, all the patterns on the birds were full of solid colour and weren't really that apt for the event in Scotland so I sent Josh an e-mail outlining what I was doing, the fact I had little/ no budget and asked whether he'ld be interested in designing some templates so we could place the birds in the Che Camille boutique. Anyway... he replied back that day, I photographed some fabric samples and between us we came up with a set of designs that reflected the kimono fabrics in a graphic way on these paper Japanese-style birds.

Since working so closely with Hetty on this project I have a reasonably good idea of what she does/ doesn't like but just to make sure I sent Hetty a link to Josh's site and she loved the birds too!

... I received the designs the afternoon before I was about to travel, along with ai templates so I could create my own, which I did, I printed off a set of 18+ of both our designs and spray mounted them on cardboard and plan utilise our time on the train by making lots of little paper birds as well as other little tasks we've planned to do on our journey up there... (necklace making, card folding, collage cutting put for wall etc.) THANK YOU JOSH!!!

Real life.

"It all (very nearly) went Pete Tong" today.

Design ideals and real life concerns coincided in a huge way and Hetty was faced with this which would also have a knock on affect with the fmp. She called me as soon as she found out and there was a chance the show in Scotland may not go ahead, or may have to reduced. Anyway by the end of the day the issue she was faced with sorted itself out and we're both looking forward to going to Scotland and putting up all the work in place...

but I learnt a great deal today.

> About how best to deal with the situation... This project is set in the real world, so my reactions would have consequences inside and outside of Chelsea.
> I told Hetty that whatever she decides I will understand as obviously family comes first.
> As well as in the mean time I just had to continue with things... I had an afternoon with Mick in laser cutting planned and just had continue on with my day as I had planned it until both Hetty and I had our meeting in the evening to discuss what to do next.
> What I realised through talking to David and Geoff as that this is real life and these things happen, it's not ideal but a solution can be found.

Anyway, this was a circumstance beyond my control and obviously I felt for Hetty, but we're back on track and getting back to moving as we were... so here goes...

Florals everywhere!

I went to Topshop today and it was literally impossible to get around without seeing flowers everywhere!! I realised how strange the concept of "trend prediction" is, because I'd worked on all of the floral page layouts in December... and now... in late May... here the content of those pages are... absolutely everywhere!

Hetyy and I thought this great as we can definitely play up to the whole FLORALS ARE IN when showing off her shoes next week!

Tuesday photo-shoot

here are some behind the scenes pics I took on my mobile. We had to get the model and photographer really close in order for some of the shots to look like they were taken by the person wearing the shoes. They were both troopers for getting stuck in and taking on board my concept/ co- art direction.

Locations of shoot:

Model.

E-mail to Mai (the model) :

*** TUESDAY: LOVE SHOES PHOTO SHOOT ***

DEAREST MAI !

Your lovely profile pic inspired me to ask you! The photo-shoot will just literally be about having fun in different locations whilst wearing bespoke shoes that you love.

Here's what Hetty's shoes look like & examples of the press she has received:

http://www.hettyrose.co.uk/

Location (still to be confirmed but highly likely) :

1. Covent Garden
2. Kensington Gardens

TIME: Shoot start time 1pm, Meet at Covent Garden tube Station.

STYLING: (I figured it would be easier to just bookmark your facebook photos to you...)

>>> (LINK)
--- love this red coat!

>>> (LINK)
---- lots and lots of flowers in hair! ALSO LOVE

>>> Example of link

--- colourful tights! yes yesX

>>> (LINK)
--- glam earrings are great and although I love the handbag it won't be appropriate for this shoot as no obvious brand names can be seen...

and any colourful/frilly socks.

xxx see you tomorrow!

Ok, here are my reasons for using Mai....

- she is willing to travel to any location we take.
- she has great legs
- she has fair skin, and the shoes show up best on lighter skin then dark in terms of this particular shoot.
- she is my friend, and will take direction from me well, which is really important as the photographer will need to get really close to the model.

My images online

.. on the Che Camille website!

Meeting (with photographer) recap.

I was really pleased as the photographer really did her research! She looked into all elements of Hetty's website to try and understand the shoes and remembered everything I told her about where the materials are sourced and how they are made! We looked through some Japaneese magazines that she had... but in particular I liked a series that she showed me Martin Parr had done. I took some pics from it on my mobile...

> I like the way in one shot the shoe is out of focus, yet you can still make out it's shape and colours.

We sat in Shoreditch for 2 hours finalising ideas (and eating expensive cake) to narrow our ideas to two separate shoots.

Idea one (which I had previosuly discussed with Hetty and that she liked):
is based on someone who loves their shoes. The camera follows around a girl who just loves to look at her feet. I have many girl friends who take pictures of their shoes just because they loved them as much as they would any other object.

- Location will be discussed and arranged by me.
- A model will be required.

Idea two:
Using bright coloured backgrounds and placing the shoe on them. These pictures will be fun, vibrant product shots with real flowers out of focus in front of them. Keeping in theme with the animations and bringing the shoes to life!

I have a meeting with a photographer...

... who may be doing some extra fashion shoots with me. So have put together an example of shots/ crops that I mentioned to her that I like...

Hetty tags

the tags came out better than I thought, I prefer the ones with the non-scripted typeface best. I made about 100 of these... so that we can give some away on the day of the event too! I also etched some of the patterns into wood to, which will act as part of the display.

Thursday feedback.

Today's feedback session was useful. I realised that all my worries about the project aren't actual worries in terms of ideas/ concept just general worries... e.g where to get a projector from? will the book be bound in time? etc. I have from today signed off any spare time that I may have once had to this project to make sure it all gets done. However, absorbing myself in this doesn't bother me, I am really enjoying this project, I am stressed to the enth degree but it is stress that I am placing on myself as I want this event in Glasgow to be brilliant! Hetty has been supportive of ideas and I appreciate the help that she and Camille will be offering in terms of collaborating to make the event come together on the day.

It was great to see the high levels of work produced in my group it was very inspiring and encouraging...

Good luck to all, I hope it all comes together in the next few weeks!

Examples of todays stop-frame:

This first animation was inspired by this old image I found of female synchronise swimmers in a 1950's magazine (bought from Saturday's car boot sale) titled 'Women's Weekly'. There was something so classically vintage about it all that suited the nature of Hetty's shoes... I did LOTS of tests before I got this work!

Stop-frame

After David showed me how to work istopmotion in Pete's 'Motion Graphics' space I realised how much time I would save if I actually used the facilities (unknown to Des Comm students) at the college. The space is ideal for stop-frame animation so I e-mailed Pete who kindly let me use the space for the day! Great!

After a day of stop-framing I realised that the rough storyboards I had planned a few nights before actually helped to make for better animations... It was when I wasn't sure what action I wanted to depict that things where less successful. Anyway, this is the set up for the day:

Research

Ideas:

> magic floating shoes.
> 3d pages... have the flowers on the hoes pop out.
> Incorporate illustrations by Hetty ... bright and colourful ... accompanied by bold use of type.
